Kimberley Cotton Company Limited (KCCL) was formed April 2021 to establish a multi-user cotton processing facility in Kununurra and in November 2022 a key milestone was reached with raising funds from shareholders and Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) to proceed with construction.
With the construction program completed, the official opening day was the 11th of August 2025, just in time for the ginning season with exports of Ord cotton to commence thereafter.
We forecast a delivery of at least $250 million of direct public benefit to the region and facilitate a longstanding cotton industry in the Ord Valley, creating ongoing local jobs, as well as many indirect business and employment opportunities.
Having a local gin is essential for the expansion of cotton production and other supply chain industries to achieve long-term economic benefits. This will boost on-farm, freight, logistics and processing jobs, plus provide a supplementary local-origin feed source to the pastoral cattle industry in northern Western Australia through cottonseed.
With a clean energy focus, the Ord gin utilises hydro-electric power generated at Lake Argyle. This substantially reduces the carbon footprint of the ginning process when compared to the majority of Australian gins powered by electricity generated from gas, coal or diesel. By using the Ord hydro power, the gin supplies cotton lint to the market that is produced using renewable energy.
The Kimberley Cotton Gin project is supported by founding shareholders Kimberley Agricultural Investment Pty Ltd (KAI), Ord River District Cooperative Ltd (ORDCO) & Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corporation). Other key Shareholders include Prime Grain Pty Ltd, Namoi Cotton Limited, Cotton Growers Services Pty Ltd, as well as local family growers and businesses in the Ord Valley region.
